Sedation Dentistry – Keeping Dental Treatment Pain Free

Does going to the dentist give you anxiety? If so, you’re not the only one. Nearly 60% of Americans suffer from dental anxiety. This fear, although very common, can have a significantly negative effect on getting proper dental care. So what can be done to calm your nerves?

Sedation Dentistry.

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help eliminate pain, discomfort, and even anxiety. There are many types of sedation and varying levels of sedation as well. At our Millersville dental office, we offer several types of sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a form of sedation that can be taken orally, usually in pill form. Depending on the dosage of the sedative, this medication can be minor or moderate. This is one of the more common or routine dental sedation methods. These pills can cause sleepiness and feelings of drowsiness, but normally do not knock the patient out. It’s a form of conscious sedation that doesn’t put the patient to sleep.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedatives get the moderate sedation into effect more quickly and allows the dentist to alter and adapt the level of sedation according to the needs of the patient. This is a great choice for those who avoid the dental office due to extreme anxiety. Usually those who have received IV sedation don’t even remember the dental procedure.

Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a gas that can be inhaled through an oxygen mask to help you as a patient relax and remain calm throughout your oral health treatment. Plus, this is a kind of anesthesia that wears of quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after your appointment safely.

Whether you’re looking for a local anesthetic or full on general anesthesia, Dr. Brian Valle’s office has the sedation dentistry options for you.
